The BWHers on Team Brigham gather in Hopkinton before the Boston Marathon.
Months of intense training and fundraising culminated Monday for Team Brigham, as members ran 26.2 miles from Hopkinton, up and over Heartbreak Hill to Copley Square in the 110th Boston Marathon. The 133 members of Team Brigham were among more than 22,000 runners competing in the marathon.
Veteran marathon runner Alex Quaas, MD, PhD, of Obstetrics and Gynecology, joined the team this year for the first time. “The team spirit was great,” said Quaas, who was back at work on Tuesday.
Thanks go to the runners and those who supported and cheered them on. Team Brigham supporters marked their official cheering section on Beacon Street, about two miles before the finish line, with giant BWH balloons, signs and a sea of spectators with blue T-shirts and noisemakers.
“Passing by was the best moment of the race,” Quaas said. “This incredible noise erupted and everyone was cheering and shouting. It was great.”
Team Brigham expects to meet its $500,000 fund-raising goal when all pledges come in next month. The money supports programs run by the Office for Women, Family and Community Programs, including Passageway and the Student Success Jobs Program. To support Team Brigham, visit www.brighamandwomens.org/teambrigham and make an online donation to BWH or click the online auction link and make a bid.
“Thank you to all the members of Team Brigham for their tireless efforts to raise money for our community programs,” said BWH President Gary Gottlieb. “Your performance on race day was inspiring, and your generosity and contributions surely are appreciated by the community. Congratulations.”
A Team Brigham celebration with food and music will be held today, 7 – 11 p.m. at An Tua Nua, 835 Beacon St. There is a $10 cover charge. Members of Team Brigham get in free.
